1836 The Creek nation is relocated west of the Mississippi River.
The move is completed in 1840.
1846 The Wilmot Proviso leads to Alabama Democrats' adoption of the Alabama Platform.
1861 Alabama withdraws from the Union (January 11).
1864 The Battle of Mobile Bay is fought and is won by Union naval forces.
1868 Alabama is readmitted to the Union (June 25).
1874 The state government comes under the control of local Democrats.
1901 A new state constitution is adopted.
1918 Construction of Wilson Dam begins.
1933 The Tennessee Valley Authority is established and takes over Wilson Dam.
1949 A rocket research facility is founded at Huntsville  in 1950s becomes a U.S. space program Center.
1955 Blacks seeking to integrate buses in Montgomery begin a bus boycott.
1965 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., leads the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march.
1979 Richard Arrington becomes the first black mayor of Birmingham.
1986 Guy Hunt becomes the first Republican to be elected governor of Alabama since Reconstruction.
6000 bc Russell Cave is first occupied by human beings.
ad 700 The Mississippian, or Mound Builders, culture appears.
1540 Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto and his expedition
enter what is now Alabama.
1559 Tristán de Luna founds a Spanish settlement near Mobile Bay.
1702 Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, erects Fort Louis de
la Louisiane on the Mobile River.
It serves as capital of the French province of Louisiana until 1711.
1763 The Alabama country, as part of La east of the Mississippi River,&
Mobile Bay area are ceded to Great Britain by Spain.
1783 The Mobile Bay region is returned to Spain and remains Spanish until 1813.
The rest of what is now Alabama is ceded to the United States.
1798 The Mississippi Territory is created to include much of Alabama.
1813 The United States seizes the Mobile Bay area from Spain.
1814 General Andrew Jackson and his forces defeat the Upper Creek at Horseshoe Bend.
1817 The Alabama Territory is created.
1819 Alabama is admitted to the Union as the 22nd state (December 14).
